Barbie arrived on the market in 1959 (see above pic), costing $3 a doll. She was the creation of an American businesswoman, Ruth Handler, who named the doll after her daughter Barbara. Their family business, Mattel, broke toy-selling records with Barbie, and her popularity endures today.
Here's some journeys of Barbie throughout the years:

1964: Barbie and Ken in formalwear.
January 1985: Barbie and Ken dolls wear outfits designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier

March 1999: The most expensive Barbie doll in the world is unveiled to mark her 40th Marchanniversary. The doll wears jewellery containing 160 diamonds set in 18-carats white gold, and is worth £50,000.
February 2005: Bettina Dorfmann has the largest Barbie collection in the world and entered the Guinness book of world records in 2002. She has more than 2,500 dolls, plus a 'Barbie hospital' where she repairs broken dolls.
2007: Faces of Barbie collection
2008: Barbie always follows the latest trend (compared to the one of 1959)
Vera Wang 2008 Luxe Barbie: The Vera Wang Luxe Bride Barbie Doll from the Gold Label Collection is simply stunning in a dress inspired by one of the gowns in the Vera Wang Luxe Collection.
