Candice is a 31-year-old New Yorker. She met a nice lawyer at a bar and agreed to see The Avengers with him. When she arrived for the date, he was wearing a fedora. The date did not go well.

Afterwards, Candice gave her would-be beau the brush-off via text. He responded with a lengthy message seemingly written for a male friend—in which he griped that his date had been a mere "5.5 out of 10 (average)." Shortly thereafter, he sent a hilariously transparent apology message.

Tragic accidental text, or world's most passive-aggressive "neg"? I'm leaning toward the latter. Here are the messages:

Berndnaut Smilde can control the weather. The Dutch artist can turn a clear sky cloudy — indoors. In his latest project, he’s installed real Nimbus clouds in empty gallery spaces in Amsterdam.

Smilde’s godlike powers come from simple science — he carefully regulates the temperature and humidity of the space, ensuring that conditions are perfect. Then, he sprays a short burst from a fog machine to create a cottony cloud suspended in the middle of the room for just an instant before it collapses.

“I’m interested in the ephemeral aspect of the work,” Smilde said in an e-mail. “It’s there for a brief moment and then the cloud falls apart. It’s about the potential of the idea, but in the end it will never function.”

Smilde’s clouds dissipate so quickly that they exist mainly in photographs. He chooses surreal spaces, such as empty churches or galleries, as his setting. One photo, taken in a room with bright blue walls, is evocative of the painter Rene Magritte’s azure skies and puffy clouds.

“I wanted to make a very clear image, an almost cliché and cartoon like visualisation of having bad luck,” writes Smilde in his artist’s statement.

However, the rare audience that got to see Smilde’s work in person — captured on video for a Dutch Web site, was all smiles.

A fan of the festive season in Round Rock, Texas has rigged up a series of 25,000 Christmas lights - all set to an interpretation of the theme tune to popular smartphone game Angry Birds.

The impressive minute long display - seen here being tested in advance of Christmas - is set to a cover version of the theme song by artist Pomplamoose, and is just one of a number of musical spectacles arranged by the US household.

Using sequencing software, thousands of lights and many metres of wiring, John Storms is able to rig any song he chooses to the resplendent display.

However, the Angry Birds inspired tune is a slight departure for homeowner Mr Storms who normally lights up Christmas hits.

According to his website, listentoourlights.com, which contains a handy 'how-to' guide for those aspiring to emulate the festive flourish, Mr Storms says he chose the Angry Birds song because of his love for the novelty game.

As well as posting his creations on YouTube, passers-by are able to experience the full effect of Mr Storms yuletide arrangements; the music is transmitted on low-power FM so they can watch and listen from their cars.

Some online viewers are happy to remain just that however, one commentator jokingly remarking: "I would hate living near you".

Many use the Internet for information gathering, many use it for work. But if you just want to waste time, like channel surfing until something interesting comes by, here are some sites for you to visit. In almost all, you will waste time. That's good isn't it?

StumbleUpon

Channel surf the internet with the StumbleUpon toolbar to find great websites, videos, photos and more based on your interests. StumbleUpon learns what you like and makes better recommendations. StumbleUpon is a toolbar that beds into your browser and gives you the chance to surf through thousands of excellent pages that have been stumbled upon by other web-users.

What is Fark?

Fark isn't an acronym. It's about news that isn't really news. It is a news accumulator and an edited social networking news site. The first thing you should know is that Fark.com isn't a Weblog. The slogan "It's not news, it's Fark;" says it all.

Orisinal

Orisinal has 59 online games. They allow you to play and waste time in multiple dimensions. If you want to solve the cancer, world hunger or the U.S. budget deficit problem, then go someplace else. This is a complete time waster.

New Yorker Reporting and Essays web site

Writing, blogging, politics, culture, arts, music, profiles, cartoons and much more--not less. Whether you are liberal or conservative, the writing is clear and provocative. You may spend a lot of time here--some just to get acquainted, some to waste. For a different take, the New Yorker Reporting web site will give you many hours of information. Not exactly a time waster, but a time devourer nevertheless.

Unspun

Lists, lists, lists and more lists. Who are the best baseball players on Steroids? What is the Worst Month to Plant Flowers, and what is the Most Enjoyable Television Talk Show? Unspun has lists of odd and unusual topics. They are built by consensus from users and participants. It's fun to spend time there. Oh, by the way, Barry Bonds leads the list.

Google Earth

Where is your childhood home, your grade school, Barbara Streisand's home or any number of other locations? Google Earth combines the power of Google Search with satellite imagery, maps, terrain and 3D buildings to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips. Just type in an address, press Search, and you'll zoom right in.

The Onion

If you take your news seriously, don't visit The Onion. No news is serious here; it's a great place to find out what is happening around the world by taking the anti-serious approach. It's not real but it is. Here's an example: "Modern-Day Martin Luther Nails 95 Comment Cards To IHOP Door."

Bit Torrents

If you are into file sharing, then Bit Junkie or Mini Nova have some of the largest index sites for torrents. What is a torrent? BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer protocol used for the distribution of large files or file sharing. This is a place where you can spend and waste a lot of time looking for videos , books, anime, movies and music.

Rotten Tomatoes

Guilty Pleasure? Hmm? Reading about celebrities? Hmm? At Rotten Tomatoes you can indulge in tripe, meaningless lives. Your life is boring, so live vicariously through Matt or Jessica, or Ben or Cameron. You can get news, pictures, gossip and enjoy all the envy you can muster. And rest assured, you'll never win any important prize, Nobel or otherwise.

Craigslist

Meaningful and meaningless and important and worthless, Craigslist is the site for you. Go waste your time here, because for every meaningful item you find you can look around at all of the junk out there.

These are the 10 sites on the net to waste time on. There are many others to add to this list but that would be a waste of time.

Elephants are the only mammal that can’t jump

First of all, just so you know, it is true that adult elephants can’t jump – if by jumping we mean the state of having no feet on the ground at the same time after propelling oneself from a stationary position. But contrary to the popular myth that it is is the only mammal that can’t, it is joined by a few others. Firstly, the sloth is unable to jump which suits its lazy lifestyle rather well. Also, rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses also cannot jump, though unlike elephants, when they run it is possible for them to have all four feet off the ground.

The Fruit eaten by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden was an apple

Nowhere in the Bible is the fruit eaten by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden referred to as an apple. The fruit is called the “fruit of the tree” (that is, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil), and neither the fruit nor the tree is identified by species. In Middle English, as late as the 17th century “apple” was a generic term for all fruit other than berries but including nuts.
However, in continental European art from that period representing the Fall of Man the fruit is often depicted as an apple. The apple myth comes from a Latin word likeness: Latin mălus = “bad”, mălum = “an evil”, mālus = “apple tree” and “mast of a ship”, mālum = “apple (fruit)”.

You can extend your penis or widen its girth with special devices or medications

This is patently untrue and the source of millions of spam emails sent around the world every day. Vacuum pumps, pills, stretching techniques: none of them make one iota of difference to the size of your manhood (and consequently the engine size of your car). The only way to enlarge your penis is to have enhancement surgery. This is, obviously, extremely expensive, extremely painful, and extremely gruesome.

Jihad is an “Islamic war on the western world”

Jihad is not an “Islamic war on the western world” but rather a verb meaning to struggle or to strive. One can have an internal jihad, family jihad, or religious jihad, which may or may not include violence towards non-Muslims.
A comparison may be made with the term “crusade”, which is sometimes considered by Muslims to mean Western violence against Islam, when it is more often used as a metaphorical struggle; for example, “a crusade against drugs”.

Goldfish have a memory of only three seconds

The notion that goldfish have a memory of only three seconds is completely false
They have been trained to navigate mazes and can recognize their owners after an exposure of a few months.

Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves

In fact, it freed little or no slaves. Why? Because the emancipation proclamation – 1862 – declared the freedom of all slaves in the confederate states – that is, the states over which Lincoln and the Union government had no control. Furthermore, it did not free slaves from any of the states that were already under union control. This would be like Australia trying to declare a law binding on New Zealanders, when they are two separate nations. The emancipation proclamation was, effectively, worthless. It was not until the Thirteenth Amendment, December 6, 1865, that slavery was officially abolished in full.

Shaving cause hair to grow back thicker or coarser or darker

Shaving does not cause hair to grow back thicker or coarser or darker. This belief is due to the fact that hair that has never been cut has a tapered end, whereas, after cutting, there is no taper. Thus, it appears thicker, and feels coarser due to the sharper, unworn edges. Hair can also appear darker after it grows back because hair that has never been cut is often lighter due to sun exposure.

Sugar cause hyperactivity in children

Sugar does not cause hyperactivity in children Double blind trials have shown no difference in behaviour between children given sugar full or sugar-free diets, even in studies specifically looking at children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or those considered “sensitive” to sugar. In fact, it was found that the difference in the children’s behaviour was all in the parents’ minds.

There is a dark side of the Moon

There is no dark side of the Moon; every part of the Moon’s surface (except perhaps deep craters near the poles) is illuminated by the Sun roughly half of the time. The phrase uses the word “dark” in the less-frequent sense of “unknown” or “obscure” to refer to the far side of the Moon, which because of tidal locking is never visible from Earth.

The Great Wall of China is the only manmade structure visible from space.

It is commonly claimed that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from the Moon. This is false. None of the Apollo astronauts reported seeing any man-made object from the Moon. The misconception is believed to have been popularized by Richard Halliburton decades before the first moon landing.

A true PSA that doesn't shy away from the gruesome details. Unlike most movies, the crash isn't really the star, it's the aftermath this is the focus.

The 30 minute movie, which this is a clip of, supposedly dives deeper into the consequences of what a simple, seemingly innocent, act of texting and taking your eyes off the road can do.

I would recommend this to anyone with teens and tweens (not like there aren't plenty of adults that could use a lesson in keeping their eyes on the road).

Why do we love roller coasters? They are almost a perversion of the pleasure-pain principle. We are drawn to them even as they incite fear, get our hearts racing, turn our knuckles white and toss us around mercilessly. Then we get off and jump right back in line. Beginning in the early 1990s, roller coasters began their second Golden Age (the first was during the Jazz-Age 1920s when the wooden lattices dotted the U.S. landscape) and their numbers and variety show no signs of letting up. Why do we love roller coasters? Who knows? But, it seems, we can't get enough of them.

Its claim to fame is its name - one of the world's longest.

So you might expect those writing signs to Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg to try extra hard to copy it down correctly.

But it has emerged that directions to the beauty spot have been spelled wrong for years.

The Indian name, which means 'The fishing place at the boundaries, the neutral meeting ground', was written with an O at letter 20 in place of a U and an H at letter 38 instead of an N.

Officials in Webster, Massachusetts, found the error by consulting historical books and have promised to correct it.

Many residents in the small town do not even try to pronounce its name, simply referring to it as Lake Webster.

Diplomats, soldiers, politicians and economists all love a good acronym. Here is one of the five of the most misleading, insulting, and just plain annoying acronyms.

RINGO, BINGO, and GONGO

What does it stand for?
Research and independent non-governmental organization, business and industry non-governmental organization, and government-organized non-governmental organization.

What is it?
As the influence and prominence of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) has grown in international affairs, a subfield of civil society taxonomy has grown to distinguish abnormal NGOs. RINGOs (such as the Center for Clean Air Policy) and BINGOS (such as the European electricity industry's Eurelectric) come up frequently in climate-change discussions. GONGO generally refers to organizations set up by authoritarian governments to fake the appearance of civil society. Nashi, Russia's state-organized, pro-Kremlin youth group, is a great example.

Why it's bad:
RINGOs and BINGOs just sound silly, bringing to mind a Beatles concert in a church basement more than and public-private partnerships to address emissions standards. Creating the designation BINGO also implies, inaccurately, that normal NGOs are completely independent from the interests of industry. In fact, many so-called independent NGOs rely on corporate donations for their activities. As for GONGOs, an acronym generally shouldn't directly contradict itself. Why not just call them what they are? Government agencies.

Leandro Erlich is known for installations that seem to defy the basic laws of physics and befuddle the viewer, who is introduced into jarring environments that momentarily threaten a sense of balance or space. For this exhibition, Erlich presents one of his most well-known and critically acclaimed pieces, Swimming Pool.

Erlich has constructed a full-size pool, complete with all its trappings, including a deck and a ladder. When approached from the first floor, visitors are confronted with a surreal scene: people, fully clothed, can be seen standing, walking, and breathing beneath the surface of the water. It is only when visitors enter the Duplex gallery from the basement that they recognize that the pool is empty, its construction a visual trick fashioned by the artist. A large, continuous piece of acrylic spans the pool and suspends water above it, creating the illusion of a standard swimming pool that is both disorienting and humorous.

Exhibition currently on at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, United States. From Sunday 19 October 2008 to Monday 05 October 2009.

Make the room seeth-and-breath. Walls will melt, spoons will bend, and your hand will quiver.

1. Stare at the center for at least ten seconds. Your eyes will want to look away, but focus on the center as intently as you can.

2. Stare at any solid object in your house - e.g. your hand, a book, a friend, and watch it warp!

Television's most famous cartoon family feature on these stamps unveiled today by the United States Postal Service.

Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie all feature on their own 44-cent stamps, which are due to go on sale in the States on May 7.

People are being urged by the postal service to vote for their favourite in an online poll.

The characters, created by cartoonist Matt Groening, have become US pop culture icons after 20 years on television.

'The Simpsons stamps, which includes known philatelists Bart Simpson, will serve as a great opportunity to interest youngsters into stamp collecting,' said James L. Brooks, executive producer of the show.

The Postal Service has launced a Simpsons-themed site with special products and a poll asking fans to vote for their favorite stamp.

Sometimes incredibly intelligent people can off themselves in really dumb ways as well. Here's 10 people who were too smart to have died in outlandish manners, in alphabetical order.

1. AeschylusThe ancient Greek playwright died around 500 BC when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his noggin. Apparently, the eagle mistook the playwright's bald head for a rock.

2. Attila the HunOn his wedding night, he got so drunk he didn't realize that his nose was bleeding profusely. Mrs. Hun awoke the next morning to find the groom dead, drowned in his own blood.

3. Sir Francis BaconTo see if snow would preserve meat, the 17th century philosopher / statesman / scientist killed a chicken and then spent hours trying to stuff the carcass full of snow. When it was all over, there were 2 bodies in the snow.

4. Tycho BraheIn 16th century Denmark, it was considered rude to leave a banquet table before the meal had ended. The heavy drinking astronomer suffered in polite agony rather than excuse himself to heed the call of nature. As a result, his bladder burst and he died a slow and painful death.

5. Jim FixxThe author of the late seventies bestseller The Complete Book of Running touted running and a healthy diet as the key to longevity. He died from a heart attack while jogging. An autopsy revealed massive blockage in three coronary arteries.

6. Holy Roman Emperor Frederick IClanking through the desert of the Holy Land in heavy armor, 12th century Holy Roman Emperor Frederick was so happy when he reached the Saleph River, he jumped in to quench his thirst. Unfortunately, he forgot to take his armor off and therefore sank to the bottom like an anvil.

7. Jean Baptiste LullyDuring a rehearsal of his latest composition, the 17th century composer got so excited he accidentally thrust his conductor's baton deep into his right foot. As a result, Lully subsequently died of blood poisoning.

8. Pope Johann XII

9. Jerome Irving RodaleThe founder of the organic food movement and the publisher of the Rodale Press told interviewer Dick Cavett in 1971 that he'd live to 100. Moments later, the 72 year old Rodale slumped dead in his chair from a heart attack. This episode of The Dick Cavett Show was never broadcast.

10. Tennessee WilliamsYears of alcohol and drug abuse took a fatal toll on the noted playwright, who choked to death on an aspirin cap while inebriated in 1983.
